Inherited from Middle Assamese ঝিঁকা (zhĩka), from Early Assamese *ঝিঙ্কা (jhiṅka), from Sanskrit ঝিঙ্গাক (jhiṅgāka), borrowed from Proto-Munda *ʤʰiŋgaː. Cognate with Bodo (India) जिंखा (ziŋka), Sylheti ꠏꠤꠋꠉꠣ (zíṅga), Bengali ঝিঙে (jhiṅe).
