Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀝𑀸𑀦𑀬𑀢𑀺 (*ṭānayati, tightens, pulls), probably a retroflexed derivation of Sanskrit तानयति (tānáyati, causes to extend), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tānáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *tonéyeti, the causative of *ten- (to stretch, extend).
