Borrowed from Classical Persian بغداد (bağdād), probably from Middle Persian 𐭡𐭢𐭣𐭲 (bgdt /⁠bagdād⁠/), from Old Persian *Bagadātah, ultimately from Proto-Iranian *BágadaHtah (literally god-given); doublet of ভগদত্ত (bhogodotto).
