From Sanskrit ৱৰ্ধতে (vardhate, “to grow, increase”). Cognate to Sylheti ꠛꠣꠠꠣ (baṛa), Hindi बढ़ना (baṛhnā), Marathi वाढणे (vāḍhṇe).
