From Sanskrit মাতৃ (mātṛ), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mā́tar-, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *méh₂tēr (mother). Cognates include Persian مادر (mâdar), Proto-Slavic *mati, (thence Russian мать (matʹ)), Armenian մայր (mayr), Mycenaean Greek 𐀔𐀳𐀩 (ma-te-re) (modern Greek μητέρα (mitéra)), Latin māter, English mother.
