Inherited from Prakrit 𑀲𑀼𑀯𑀇 (suvaï), 𑀲𑁄𑀯𑀇 (sovaï), from Vedic Sanskrit स्वपति (svapati, to lie down, sleep), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *swápati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swápati, from Proto-Indo-European *swép-e-ti, from *swep- (to sleep). Doublet of স্বপ্ন (śopno, dream) and খোয়াব (khōẇab).
