Inherited from Prakrit 𑀓𑀡𑁆𑀳𑀪𑀽𑀫 (kaṇhabhūma), from Sanskrit कृष्णभूम (kṛṣṇabhūma), from कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) +‎ भूमि (bhūmi), literally black soil.
