Inherited from Old Gujarati गढ (gaḍha), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀕𑀠 (*gaḍha), from Sanskrit *गृध (gṛdha, fort), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰr̥dʰás (enclosure), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰr̥dʰ-ó-s, from *gʰerdʰ- (to enclose). Cognate with Punjabi ਗਡ਼੍ਹ (gaṛh), Kumaoni गड़, Bengali গড় (goṛ), Hindi गढ़ (gaṛh), Marathi गढी (gaḍhī).
