Inherited from Prakrit 𑀙𑀕𑀡 (chagaṇa), from Sanskrit *छकन (chakana), from शकृत् (śakṛt), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćák-r̥ ~ *ćak-ná-s (dung, excrement), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱókʷ-r̥ ~ *ḱekʷ-én-s (dung, excrement). Cognate with Baluchi سغن (saġan, dung), Marathi शेण (śeṇ), Persian سرگین (sargin), and Sindhi ڇيڻو (cheṇo).
