Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀡𑁆𑀡𑀤𑀺 (maṇṇadi), from Sanskrit मन्यते (mányate), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *mányatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mányatay, from Proto-Indo-European *mn̥yo-, from *men- (to think).

Cognate with Assamese মনা (mona), মানা (mana), Bengali মানা (mana), Hindustani ماننا / मानना (mānnā), Marathi मानणे (mānṇe), Punjabi ਮੰਨਣਾ (mannṇā) / مَنّنا (mannnā), Sindhi مَڃَڻُ / मञणु.
