From Proto-Dravidian *pol-am. Related to పొలమరి (polamari, cultivator.) Cognate with Tamil புலவு (pulavu, Arable land.), Tamil புலம்பன் (pulampaṉ, Chief or lord of a maritime tract [probably originally 'chief of a village in the maritime tract'].), Malayalam പുലം (pulaṁ, Cornfield, place.), Kannada ಪೊಲ (pola, A plough-field; place, direction.), Tulu ಪುಲ (pula, Pasturage.).
