Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Tai *kɯɲᴬ (to eat). Cognate with Lao ກິນ (kin), Northern Thai ᨠᩥ᩠ᨶ, Khün ᨠᩥ᩠ᨶ, ᦂᦲᧃ (k̇iin), Tai Dam ꪀꪲꪙ, Tai Nüa ᥐᥤᥢ (kin), Shan ၵိၼ် (kǐn), Ahom 𑜀𑜢𑜃𑜫 (kin), Saek กิ๋น, Zhuang gwn, Nong Zhuang gwn, Bouyei genl. Compare also Proto-Austronesian *kaən (whence Tagalog kain, Malay makan).
