Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Tai *ɟaŋᴮ, probably from Middle Chinese (MC tsyhingH, “scales”) or (MC tsyhing|tsyhingH, “to weigh”). Cognate with Lao ຊັ່ງ (sang), ᦋᧂᧈ (tsang¹), Shan ၸင်ႈ (tsāng), Zhuang caengh.
