From Proto-Tai *C̥.daːjꟲ (thread). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨯ᩶ᩣ᩠ᨿ, Khün ᨯ᩶ᩣ᩠ᨿ, Lao ດ້າຍ (dāi), ᦡᦻᧉ (ḋaay²), Shan လၢႆႈ (lāai, silk), Ahom 𑜓𑜩 (day, thread) or 𑜃𑜩 (nay, silk) or 𑜎𑜩 (lay, silk), Nong Zhuang ndaij.
