From Proto-Southwestern Tai *tomᴬ¹ (mud; earth), from Proto-Tai *tɯmᴬ (soil). Cognate with Lao ຕົມ (tom), Ahom 𑜄𑜤𑜪 (tuṃ), Zhuang doem.
