Etymology[edit]
From ปลูก (bplùuk, “to erect”) + เรือน (rʉʉan, “house”) + ตาม (dtaam, “according (to)”) + ใจ (jai, “mind”) + ผู้ (pûu, an agent noun prefix, literally “one (who)”) + อยู่ (yùu, “to live; to reside”); literally "to erect a house according to the mind of the resident".

- Often found in combination with the proverb ผูกอู่ตามใจผู้นอน (pùuk-ùu-dtaam-jai-pûu-nɔɔn, literally “to make a hammock in accordance with the mind of the sleeper”), as ปลูกเรือนตามใจผู้อยู่ ผูกอู่ตามใจผู้นอน (bplùuk-rʉʉan-dtaam-jai-pûu-yùu pùuk-ùu-dtaam-jai-pûu-nɔɔn; “erect the house that the resident requires, create the hammock that the sleeper desires”).
