From Proto-Southwestern Tai *puːᴬ¹ (“crab”), from Proto-Tai *pɯwᴬ (“crab”). Cognate with Lao ປູ (pū), Tai Dam ꪜꪴ, Northern Thai ᨸᩪ, Lü ᦔᦴ (ṗuu), Shan ပူ (pǔu), Ahom 𑜆𑜥 (pū), Zhuang baeu, Bouyei baul.
