Borrowed from Sanskrit मार (māra, evil one; tempter; death personified) or Pali māra (idem). Compare Old Khmer māra, māra°, °māra (Buddhist Satan; death); Modern Khmer មារ (miə); Northern Thai ᨾᩣ᩠ᩁ.
