Etymology[edit]
From ยักษ์ (yák, “yakṣa, a malevolent mythological creature, depicted as having great strength and a very large body; here used as a title”) + ปักหลั่น (bpàk-làn, “the name of a yakṣa in the epic รามเกียรติ์”); after a character in the mentioned epic, being a deity who committed adultery and was then turned into a yakṣa creature and sent down to the Earth to guard a pond as punishment.
