From Proto-Tai *qrwɤjꟲ (mountain stream). Cognate with Lao ຫ້ວຍ (wany), ᦠᦽᧉ (ḣoy²), Shan ႁူၺ်ႈ (hōi), Ahom 𑜍𑜤𑜐𑜫 (ruñ), Saek รี̂, Zuojiang Zhuang khui [Ningming] or hui [Longzhou]. Compare Middle Chinese (MC sywijX).
