From Proto-Southwestern Tai *siəᴬ¹ (to lose (something)). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩈ᩠ᨿᩮ, Khün ᩈ᩠ᨿᩮ, Lao ເສຍ (sīa), ᦵᦉ (ṡe), Shan သေ (sěe), Tai Nüa ᥔᥥᥴ (), Phake ꩬေ (se), Ahom *𑜏𑜦𑜧 (*sē).
