From Proto-Tai *ʰniəwᴬ (“sticky”).
Cognate with Lao ໜຽວ (niāu), Lü ᦵᦐᧁ (ṅew), Shan ၼဵဝ် (nǎeo), Tai Nüa ᥘᥥᥝᥴ (léw) or ᥢᥥᥝᥴ (néw), Tai Dam ꪘꪸꪫ, Zhuang niu, Nong Zhuang no.
