From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰlɯəmᴬ¹ (“python”). Cognate with Lao ເຫຼືອມ (lư̄am), Lü ᦵᦜᦲᧄ (l̇oem), Shan လိူမ် (lǒem), Tai Nüa ᥘᥪᥛᥴ (lúem), Ahom 𑜎𑜢𑜤𑜉𑜫 (lüm).
