Etymology 1[edit]

From Middle Chinese (MC khaek, “guest”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨡᩯ᩠ᨠ, Lao ແຂກ (khǣk), ᦶᦃᧅᧈ (ẋaek¹), Tai Dam ꪵꪄꪀ, Shan ၶႅၵ်ႇ (khèk), Tai Nüa ᥑᥦᥐᥱ (xǎek), Phake ၵိက် (khik), Ahom 𑜁𑜢𑜀𑜫 (khik), Zhuang hek. Doublet of แคะ (kɛ́).

From Etymology 1. Attested as an ethnic label (albeit with ambiguous meaning) as early as the mid 15th century, in Palace Law during the reign of Borommatrailokkanat.[1]
