From Proto-Tai *hoːmᴬ (fragrant). Cognate with Thai หอม (hɔ̌ɔm), Northern Thai ᩉᩬᨾ, Khün ᩉᩬᨾ, ᦠᦸᧄ (ḣoam), Tai Dam ꪬꪮꪣ, Tai Dón ꪬꪮꪣ, Shan ႁွမ် (hǎum), Phake ꩭွံ (hoṃ), Ahom 𑜑𑜨𑜪 (hoṃ) or 𑜍𑜨𑜪 (roṃ), Zhuang hom.
