Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Mon-Khmer *ʔap ~ *ʔaap ~ *ʔəp (“dark, to shade”). Compare Central Nicobarese [Nancowry] öb (“mist, fog”).

Alternatively from अब्द (abda, “cloud”). Compare also អ័ភ្រ (ʼap), អ័ព្ភ (ʼap) from Sanskrit अभ्र (abhra, “cloud”).
