From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰŋɯəkᴰ (“gum; gill”), from Proto-Tai *ʰŋɯəkᴰ (“gum; gill”), from Old Chinese 顎 (OC *ŋaːɡ, “jaw”).[1]

Cognate with Thai เหงือก (ngʉ̀ʉak), Lao ເຫງືອກ (ngư̄ak), Shan ႁိူၵ်ႇ (hòek), Ahom 𑜀𑜢𑜤𑜀𑜫 (kük), Khün ᩉᩮᩥ᩠ᨦᨠ, Northern Thai ᩉᩮᩥᩬ᩠ᨦᨠ.
