Inherited from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *baʀuaŋ (“bear”). Doublet of ᬩᬭᭀᬂ (barong, “beneficent force of nature”) and ᬩ᭄ᬭᬸᬯᬂ (bruang, “bear”).
