Etymology[edit]

Formation like δρύοψ (drúops, woodpecker), on an onomatopoeic basis. Parallel names exist in other languages, like Latin upupa, Persian پوپو (pôpô), Armenian հոպոպ (hopop) and Latvian pupukis.
