Etymology[edit]

A hypostasis *ἐν-γνύ-α (*en-gnú-a, place in the knee). The stem ἰγνύς (ignús) was formed after ἰξύς (ixús, waist, loins) and ὀσφῦς (osphûs, hips or loins).
