Etymology[edit]

Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ep-, like Sanskrit अप्नस् (apnas, property, possession), Proto-Germanic *aflą (power, strength) and Hittite 𒄩𒀀𒀊𒈦 (ḫa-a-ap-pár). However, Furnée links this word with ὀμφύνειν (omphúnein, to strengthen, respect, honor), suggesting a by-form "ὀμφυν-" and thus a Pre-Greek origin.
