Etymology[edit]

Ultimately borrowed from Vietnamese Sài Gòn.

The kanji spellings 西貢, 柴棍 (西貢, 柴棍) are considered to be ateji.[1] However, the 柴棍 spelling is rooted in the Vietnamese etymology of the name; see Sài Gòn for more.
