Etymology[edit]

From Literary Chinese 合眾國 (hézhòngguó), from (union) +‎ 眾國 (democratic state), which is a calque of English United States, probably coined by Elijah Coleman Bridgman before 1844.[1] Soon rebracketed as 合衆(がっしゅう) (gasshū, assembly of people) and (こく) (koku, state).
