From 始祖 (shiso, “progenitor”) + 鳥 (chō, “bird”). Compare Chinese 始祖鳥/始祖鸟 (shǐzǔniǎo, literally “progenitor bird”), Korean 시조새 (sijosae, literally “progenitor bird”), and German Urvogel (literally “proto-bird”).
