Etymology
[edit]Compound of 木屋 (kiya, “lumber shed; lumber seller”) + 町 (machi, “town; district”). So named for the number of lumber sellers in that part of Kyōto in the early Edo period.[1] Now known for 旅館 (ryokan, “inns”) and 料亭 (ryōtei, “high-end restaurants”).
