Most likely transliterated from Russian Иоанн (Ioann), or Old Church Slavonic иоаннъ (ioannŭ), or Ancient Greek Ἰωάννης (Iōánnēs), all ultimately from Biblical Hebrew יוֹחָנָן (Yōḥānān).

Earlier transliterations include: 曜輪 [8th century] and 若望/若翰 [17th century].
