肩身が狭い • (katami ga semai) -i (adverbial 肩身が狭く (katami ga semaku))
- feeling small, ashamed, unable to hold one's head high
Usage notes[edit]
- This phrase has a syntactical subject 肩身. Thus the semantic subject is usually indefinite or implied. Otherwise, the semantic subject can be introduced as an absolute topic with は/も, or as the possessor of the syntactical subject with の. Also, the subject marker が may be omitted, giving 肩身狭い, or when the phrase is used attributively, may be replaced by の, giving 肩身の狭い.
