Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Karen *ʔlaᴬ (“moon, month”) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *la⁴ (“idem”) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s/ɡ-la (“moon; month”). Cognate with Pa'o Karen လာ, S'gaw Karen လါ (lah), Western Pwo လၩ, Eastern Pwo လာ, Burmese လ (la.).
