From Proto-Karen *səmᴬ (“three”) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *səm⁴ (“idem”) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g-sum (“three”). Cognate with Pa'o Karen သွံ, S'gaw Karen သၢ (thuh), Western Pwo ၥၧၫ့, Burmese သုံး (sum:).
