Inherited from Old Javanese kuwu (“dwelling, housing, quarter, lodging; encampment, tent; residence; administrative division under a kuwu, akuwu; leader of such administrative division”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kubu (“field hut in the rice fields”).
