First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean ᄭᅢ〮 (Yale: skáy).

Also attested in the Gugeupganibang eonhae (救急簡易方諺解 / 구급간이방언해), 1489, as Middle Korean ᄢᅢ〮 (Yale: pskáy).
