First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 소ᇇ바다ᇰ (Yale: swon-s-patang). Analyzable as 손 (son, “hand”) + ㅅ (-s-) + 바닥 (badak, “flat”).
