From Proto-Indo-European *hβ‚‚Δ“p-ehβ‚‚, from the root *hβ‚‚ep- (β€œwater”), whence also Sanskrit ΰ€…ΰ€ͺΰ₯ (Γ‘p, β€œwater”). Incompatible with Latin aqua because of the long initial /a/.
