Etymology[edit]

From 𐰘𐰨𐰇 (yinčü, “pearl”) +‎ 𐰇𐰏𐰔 (ögüz, “river”), literally “Pearl River”, likely a calque of Middle Persian origin, whence also Ancient Greek Ἰᾰξᾰ́ρτης (Iaxártēs). More at Syr Darya.
