Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Anatolian *lólos or *lālos. Kloekhorst further suggests an onomatopoeic origin. Compare Cuneiform Luwian 𒆷𒇷𒅖 (la-li-iš, tongue, gossip) and Hieroglyphic Luwian 𔓊𔓊𔑣𔓯𔐤 (LINGUA-la-ti-i-na /⁠lalatīna⁠/, language, accusative singular).
