Etymology[edit]

Usually analyzed as earlier *pe-(H)ai or *poi-(H)ai, from Proto-Indo-European *hโ‚‚ey- (โ€œto give, takeโ€) (compare Tocharian B ai- (โ€œto give, pay outโ€)) with the Hittite preverb ๐’‰๐’‚Š- (pรฉ-e- /โ pe-โ /). However, Kloekhorst rejects this and argues for an i-present *hโ‚p-รณi-ei ~ *hโ‚p-i-รฉnti, from *hโ‚ep- (โ€œto seizeโ€) (compare Sanskrit เค†เคชเฅ (ฤp, โ€œto reach, obtainโ€)).[1]
