A glass-like, usually blue object, resembling the shape of a diamond, rhombus or blossom.
Origin[edit]
Originally introduced in the Japanese mobile phone carrier Docomo's emoji set in 1999 as the pixelated depiction of a flower, ostensibly a hydrangea. When emoji was introduced to devices outside of Japan from 2008 onwards, the design was ambiguous; when emoji was standardised by the Unicode Consortium in Unicode 6.0 in October 2010, this emoji was simply named “Diamond Shape with a Dot Inside”.
Apple—which had adopted emoji from Japanese devices and popularised the concept of emoji outside of Japan—interpreted it in March 2012 as a shiny glass object with a dark blue exterior and light blue interior containing a diamond-like shape in the centre. The object was depicted as being of a small blossom (flower)-like shape, closely resembling a tilted square; the same shape as the pixelated, minimalist design by Docomo. Later, this design or variations thereof became the principal depiction of this emoji on other platforms and emoji sets (see the usage notes). Thus, the original meaning of this emoji as a flower has been lost.

Usage notes[edit]
- The design and display of this pictogram varies by platform and emoji set. Apple's emoji set (used on iOS devices) and Samsung depict a shiny glass-like object with a dark blue exterior and light blue interior containing a diamond-like shape in the centre, with the object closely resembling a tilted square with outdents in the centres of the four sides of the square. Google's Noto Color Emoji set used on Android devices (including Sony, Huawei and Xiaomi) depicts a more flower-like shape with elongated blossoms. Microsoft's design is more minimalist, showing only the blue blossom-like pattern with a light blue circle in the centre; Twemoji, used by Twitter, Discord and Mastodon, is similar but with four disjoined tilted squares and a darker blue circle surrounding the light blue circle in the centre. The licensable emoji set JoyPixels is similar but depicts a slightly-shiny pink circle in the centre surrounded by a thin grey layer. Facebook shows a tilted square-like shape with four disjointed corners with circular edges on both sides—resembling the shape of an eye—and a diamond-like shape in the centre. WhatsApp depicts a shiny glass-like layer covering the tilted square, with a shiny purple circle atop the glass layer in the centre.
