Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Persian ـدار (-dār). Compare Hindi -दार (-dār).

Suffix[edit]

-ਦਾਰ (-dār)

  1. having, possessing, holding
    ਝਿਰੀ (jhirī, slot, groove) + ‎-ਦਾਰ (-dār) → ‎ਝਿਰੀਦਾਰ (jhirīdār, slotted, grooved)

Usage notes[edit]

Added to nouns to form both adjectives and nouns. Masculine nouns of the extended declensional subtype (that is, those ending in -ਆ ) usually take an oblique case ending before the suffix. For instance:

ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ (riśtā, relation)ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ (riśtedār, relative).
ਪੱਤਾ (pattā, leaf)ਪੱਤੇਦਾਰ (pattedār, leafy).
