Etymology 1[edit]
From *-bat, the plural of *-pa (present active participle suffix). -t, noun plural ending, is also used as the third-person plural ending in some dialects (including once in the standard language), hinting that this is originally an extension, likely to distinguish from the second-person singular. -vat is originally an eastern Finnish feature and has been standard only since the early 19th century.
