Etymology[edit]

First attested as rodenburgh in 966. Compound of an unclear first element and burg (fortified settlement, castle). The first element may be a Celtic hydronym *Rodana, rood (red), or a term derived from the Latin governmental designation pagus Rodanis. The first element was gradually reinterpreted as aarden (earthen). Compare Roomburg, Rotenburg an der Fulda and Rodborough.
